UTM Tracking
Overview
What UTM tracking is
UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are small snippets of text appended to a URL that describe the source of a click. They were popularized by the original Urchin analytics software that became Google Analytics.
There are five standard parameters: utm_source (where traffic comes from), utm_medium (the channel type), utm_campaign (the campaign name), utm_term (paid keywords), and utm_content (which link or creative was clicked).
How UTM tracking works
A marketer adds parameters to a destination URL, for example ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring_sale. Tools like Google's Campaign URL Builder help construct these consistently.
When someone clicks the tagged link, analytics platforms such as GA4 read the parameters and record them against the session. Those values then populate acquisition and campaign reports, allowing traffic and conversions to be grouped by source, medium, and campaign.
Why UTM tracking matters
UTMs are the backbone of manual campaign attribution, letting teams see exactly which emails, ads, social posts, and partnerships drive traffic and conversions. Without them, much of this traffic collapses into generic buckets like 'direct' or 'referral'.
Consistency is critical: because values are case-sensitive and free-form, a naming convention prevents fragmented data (for example, 'Facebook' vs 'facebook'). UTMs also should not be used on internal links, which can overwrite the original source.

FAQ
UTM Tracking — common questions
What are the five UTM parameters?
The five standard UTM parameters are utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content. Source, medium, and campaign are the most commonly used, while term and content add keyword and creative detail.
Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?
Yes. UTM values are case-sensitive, so 'Email' and 'email' are treated as different sources. Using a consistent, lowercase naming convention prevents your campaign data from splitting into duplicates.
Should I use UTMs on internal links?
No. Adding UTMs to links between pages of your own site can overwrite the original traffic source and start a new session, distorting attribution. Reserve UTMs for external, inbound links.
