Google Tag Manager
Overview
What Google Tag Manager does
Google Tag Manager is a free tool that sits between your website and the many third-party scripts marketing relies on. Instead of hard-coding each analytics tag, ad pixel, or tracking snippet into the site, you install one GTM container, then add and edit individual tags inside its dashboard. Changes publish without a developer touching the codebase every time.
Tags, triggers, and variables
GTM works through three parts. Tags are the snippets that fire, such as a GA4 event or a Google Ads conversion. Triggers define when a tag fires, whether on a page load, button click, form submit, or scroll. Variables supply reusable values like a page URL or order total. A built-in preview mode lets you test before publishing, reducing broken tracking.
Why it matters for measurement
Clean tags are the foundation of marketing attribution. Our team uses GTM to wire up conversion tracking for PPC and Google Ads, lead generation, and sales funnels, keeping data flowing into GA4 and analytics and attribution reporting. Because non-developers can manage tags safely, campaigns launch faster and tracking stays consistent as pages change.

FAQ
Google Tag Manager — common questions
Is Google Tag Manager the same as Google Analytics?
No. Google Tag Manager deploys and manages tracking code, while Google Analytics 4 collects and reports the data those tags send. GTM is often used to install GA4, but they are separate tools.
Is GTM free?
Yes. Google Tag Manager is free. A paid enterprise version (Tag Manager 360) exists for large organizations, but the standard product covers the needs of most websites.
Does Google Tag Manager slow down my site?
GTM loads asynchronously, so it generally has minimal impact on load time. Slowdowns usually come from the number and weight of the tags you add, not the container itself, so keeping tags lean matters.
