Business process automation (BPA) uses software to run repetitive, multi-step processes automatically, so tasks move between people and systems without manual effort. Instead of copying data between apps, chasing approvals, or re-entering the same information, a defined workflow does it on rules you set. Common examples include lead routing, customer onboarding, invoicing, appointment reminders, and data syncing across a CRM, spreadsheets, and email.
How workflow automation works
Most automations follow a trigger, condition, action pattern: an event starts the workflow, rules decide what should happen, and one or more actions run across your connected apps. Platforms such as Zapier, Make, and n8n provide the connectors and logic, while webhooks and APIs link tools that don't integrate natively.
