Lookalike Audience
Overview
What a lookalike audience is
A lookalike audience is a way to reach new prospects who share characteristics with people you already value. You provide a source audience, for example a customer list, past purchasers, or high-value leads, and the ad platform models the common attributes and finds other users who resemble them.
Meta's Lookalike Audiences are the most well-known version. Google Ads has shifted away from its older similar audiences toward automated audience expansion and optimized targeting, and platforms such as LinkedIn and TikTok offer their own comparable audience-modeling features.
How it works
You start from a source audience, and audience quality matters: a focused seed of your best customers usually outperforms a large but loosely defined one. On Meta you also choose an audience size, typically expressed as a percentage of a country's population, where a smaller percentage means closer resemblance and a larger one means broader reach.
The platform then uses its data and signals from your pixel, Conversions API, or uploaded (hashed) customer list to identify similar users and serve ads to them, keeping the underlying personal data private.
Why it matters
Lookalike audiences let advertisers scale beyond people who already know them while staying anchored to the traits of proven customers, which often produces more efficient prospecting than broad, untargeted reach. The stronger and cleaner your source data, the better the modeling performs.
Effectiveness has been affected by privacy changes and signal loss, making high-quality first-party data and server-side tracking increasingly important. Lookalikes work best as one layer of a targeting strategy, tested against the platform's automated targeting options.

FAQ
Lookalike Audience — common questions
What makes a good source audience for a lookalike?
The best source audiences are focused lists of your highest-value customers, such as repeat buyers or qualified leads, rather than broad, low-intent groups. Clean, sizable first-party data helps the platform model shared traits accurately, so quality of the seed matters more than raw quantity.
What is the difference between a lookalike audience and a custom audience?
A custom audience targets specific people you already have data on, such as your customer list or site visitors. A lookalike audience uses that custom audience as a seed to find new people who resemble them. Custom audiences retarget known contacts; lookalikes prospect for similar strangers.
Does Google Ads have lookalike audiences?
Google previously offered similar audiences, but has moved toward automated audience expansion and optimized targeting that serve a comparable purpose of reaching users like your existing ones. The concept is the same across platforms, though naming and controls differ between Meta, Google, LinkedIn, and TikTok.
