Meta Conversions API
Overview
What the Meta Conversions API is
The Meta Conversions API (CAPI) is a server-side way to share conversion events with Meta. Instead of relying only on the browser-based Meta Pixel, which can be blocked by ad blockers, browser privacy features, and iOS App Tracking Transparency, your server sends events like purchases, leads, and sign-ups directly to Meta's servers, giving Meta a more complete and reliable picture of results.
How it works with the Pixel
CAPI does not replace the Meta Pixel; the two work together. The Pixel captures browser-side signals, CAPI sends server-side ones, and Meta deduplicates events that arrive from both using a shared event ID. Each event can include hashed customer data, such as email or phone, to improve matching, which helps Meta attribute conversions and optimize delivery even when browser data is missing.
Why it matters for ad performance
When conversions go untracked, Meta's algorithm optimizes on incomplete data and reported ROAS looks worse than reality. Adding the Conversions API restores much of the signal lost to cookie and tracking restrictions, which typically improves optimization, audience matching, and measurement accuracy. For marketing and analytics attribution, campaign decisions then rest on data that reflects what actually happened, not just what the browser allowed.

FAQ
Meta Conversions API — common questions
Do I still need the Meta Pixel if I use the Conversions API?
Yes. Meta recommends running both together and deduplicating shared events. The Pixel captures browser behavior and CAPI adds reliable server-side events, so using both maximizes matched conversions and optimization signal.
Is the Meta Conversions API hard to set up?
It ranges from easy to involved. Platform integrations for Shopify, WordPress, or a tag manager, and partner connectors make basic setup straightforward, while a custom server-side implementation with proper event deduplication and hashed data usually needs developer help.
Is the Meta Conversions API free?
Yes. There is no separate fee from Meta to use the Conversions API; you only pay for your ads. Costs, if any, come from developer time or third-party tools used to implement and maintain the integration.
