What makes something an AI agent
A regular chatbot answers one message at a time. An AI agent adds three capabilities: it reasons about how to reach a goal, it uses tools—web search, databases, code, or APIs—to take real actions, and it works in a loop, checking its progress and adjusting. This lets it handle multi-step tasks rather than single replies.
The language model supplies the reasoning, while tool use and memory let the agent interact with real systems and remember context across steps. Frameworks and protocols such as function calling and MCP give the model a structured way to invoke those tools safely.
Where AI agents help a business
Agents shine on repetitive, judgment-light workflows that still require pulling data from several systems: qualifying and routing leads, answering support questions from your knowledge base, scheduling, and moving information between apps.
