What Wordfence is
Wordfence is one of the most widely used security plugins for WordPress, installed on millions of sites. It bundles a web application firewall (WAF), a malware scanner, and login-security features into a single plugin managed from the WordPress dashboard.
The plugin has a capable free version and a paid Premium tier. Free covers the firewall, scanner, brute-force protection, and basic two-factor authentication; Premium adds real-time threat intelligence, country blocking, and a real-time IP blocklist.
How it works
The firewall runs as a WordPress plugin and inspects incoming traffic to block common attacks such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting, using a rule set that identifies malicious patterns. Free installs receive firewall and malware-signature rules on a delayed schedule, while Premium gets them in real time.
The scanner compares your core, theme, and plugin files against known-good versions and a database of malware signatures, flagging changed files, backdoors, and suspicious code. Login security adds two-factor authentication and limits on repeated failed logins to blunt brute-force attempts.
Why it matters
