Overview
What UptimeRobot is
UptimeRobot is a popular uptime and performance monitoring service that continuously checks whether your websites, APIs, servers, and ports are reachable. When a check fails, it alerts you so you can respond before too many users are affected, and it logs history so you can measure uptime over time.
It is a hosted (SaaS) tool with a widely used free tier, which is why it is common among developers, agencies, and small teams that want basic monitoring without infrastructure of their own.
How it works
You add a monitor by entering a URL or host and choosing a check type, such as HTTP(S), keyword (checking that expected text appears), ping, port, or SSL certificate expiry. UptimeRobot then probes the target on a set interval from multiple global locations and records whether it responded correctly.
When a monitor fails, it triggers alerts through channels like email, SMS, voice call, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Discord, and webhooks, and it can create integrations with incident tools. UptimeRobot also provides public status pages and response-time graphs so you can share status and spot slowdowns.
Why it matters
Downtime costs traffic, revenue, and trust, and it often happens when no one is watching. UptimeRobot gives you an independent, outside-in check that catches outages even when internal systems fail, which makes it a low-effort safety net for any production site or app.

The free plan offers up to 50 monitors at a fixed 5-minute check interval and is intended for personal, non-commercial use under its terms; paid plans add faster intervals (down to about one minute), longer data retention, more integrations, and commercial use. UptimeRobot monitors availability, not deep application performance, so teams often pair it with tools like Sentry or Datadog for error tracking and observability.
