What PageSpeed Insights is
PageSpeed Insights (PSI) is a free performance tool from Google. You enter a URL and it reports how quickly that page loads and becomes interactive, scoring it from 0 to 100 for mobile and desktop. It draws on two data sources: lab data from a simulated test (via Lighthouse) and field data from real Chrome users (the Chrome UX Report), when enough traffic exists.
Core Web Vitals and diagnostics
PSI highlights Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint (loading), Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness), and Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability). Below the scores, it lists specific opportunities and diagnostics, such as oversized images, render-blocking scripts, or slow server response, each with estimated time savings. The field data determines whether a page officially passes Core Web Vitals, a Google page-experience signal.

Slow pages lose visitors and conversions, and Core Web Vitals feed Google's page-experience signals. What is a good PageSpeed Insights score?
A score of 90-100 is good, 50-89 needs improvement, and below 50 is poor. But the field-data Core Web Vitals assessment matters more for SEO than the lab score, since it reflects real users.
Does PageSpeed Insights affect SEO?
Indirectly, yes. The Core Web Vitals it measures are part of Google's page-experience ranking signals, and faster pages improve engagement and conversions. It's one factor among many, not a guaranteed ranking boost.
Why is my PageSpeed score different each time?
The lab score is simulated and varies with test conditions, network, and server load, so small fluctuations are normal. The field data is more stable because it averages real users over the prior 28 days.
