Screaming Frog
Overview
What Screaming Frog is
Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a desktop application that crawls a website the way a search engine would, following links and collecting data on every URL it finds. Made by the UK agency Screaming Frog, it is a staple of technical SEO audits. A free edition handles small sites, while a paid annual license removes the crawl limit and unlocks advanced features.
What it finds
In one crawl it surfaces broken links and server errors, redirect chains, duplicate or missing page titles and meta descriptions, thin content, oversized images, canonical issues, and hreflang problems. It can extract and validate structured data, generate XML sitemaps, and, by connecting to Google Analytics and Search Console, blend crawl data with real performance metrics.
How we use it in audits
Screaming Frog is one of the first tools our team reaches for on a technical SEO engagement or site migration. Crawling the full site quickly reveals the fixes that move rankings: broken URLs, redirect loops, missing metadata, and invalid schema markup and JSON-LD. Clean crawlability also underpins GEO and AEO, since answer engines must reach and parse pages to cite them.

FAQ
Screaming Frog — common questions
Is Screaming Frog free?
There is a free edition that crawls up to 500 URLs with core features. A paid annual license lifts that limit and adds capabilities like JavaScript rendering, scheduling, and integrations with Google Analytics and Search Console.
What is Screaming Frog used for?
It is used for technical SEO audits, crawling a site to find broken links, redirects, duplicate content, missing metadata, and structured data errors, and to generate sitemaps. It is a diagnostic tool rather than a rank-tracking or keyword platform.
Screaming Frog vs Semrush or Ahrefs?
Screaming Frog is a dedicated crawler for on-site technical audits, run from your own computer. Semrush and Ahrefs are cloud platforms covering keywords, backlinks, and competitor data. They complement each other rather than compete directly.
