What PII redaction is
PII redaction is the practice of finding personally identifiable information in content and obscuring it before the content is stored, shared, or processed. Redaction can mean deleting the data, masking it (for example, showing only the last four digits), or replacing it with a placeholder token.
PII includes direct identifiers like names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, government IDs, and card numbers, as well as combinations of data that could identify someone. Redaction is a key control in privacy and data-protection programs.
How it works
Detection typically combines pattern matching for structured data like emails and card numbers with named-entity recognition or machine-learning models for names, locations, and other context-dependent identifiers. Detected spans are then masked, removed, or swapped for tokens.
In AI systems, redaction often runs before text is sent to a language model, written to logs, or added to a training set. Some workflows keep a secure mapping so tokens can be reversed later by authorized systems, while others redact irreversibly.
Why it matters
Redaction reduces the risk of leaking personal data into prompts, logs, analytics, or third-party AI providers, which supports compliance with regulations such as GDPR, HIPAA, and CCPA and lowers exposure in the event of a breach.
It is especially important for RAG systems, chatbots, and call transcripts, where user input can contain sensitive details. No detector is perfect, so redaction is usually paired with access controls, encryption, and human review for high-risk data.
