What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a proposed standard: a single Markdown file named llms.txt, placed at your domain's root, that lists your most important pages with short descriptions and links. Introduced in 2024, it is meant to give large language models a clean, curated overview of a site — the way robots.txt guides crawlers or a sitemap lists URLs — but written in plain language models parse easily.
How it works and where it stands
The file uses simple Markdown: a title, a summary, and grouped links to key documentation, products, or articles, sometimes with a fuller llms-full.txt version. It does not replace your sitemap or robots.txt; it complements them by highlighting what matters most. Adoption is still emerging and no major AI provider has confirmed it as a ranking signal, so treat llms.txt as low-cost, forward-looking hygiene rather than a guaranteed win.
Should your site add one?
Because an llms.txt file is inexpensive to create and cannot hurt, it fits naturally into a broader AI-visibility strategy. Do I need an llms.txt file?
It is optional and not yet an official standard, but it is cheap to add and low-risk. If you want to be forward-looking about AI visibility, publishing one is reasonable; it will not replace SEO fundamentals or structured data.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt or a sitemap?
No. Robots.txt controls crawler access and a sitemap lists all URLs for indexing. llms.txt is a curated, human-readable Markdown summary meant to help language models understand your most important content.
Do AI models actually use llms.txt?
Support is still limited and unconfirmed by major providers so far. It is an emerging proposal, so adopt it as inexpensive future-proofing rather than a proven traffic driver.
