Keyword Difficulty (KD)
Overview
What keyword difficulty measures
Keyword difficulty is a score that SEO tools assign to a search term to predict how competitive it is. Expressed on a 0-to-100 scale, a low number suggests you could rank with modest effort, while a high number signals entrenched, authoritative competitors. It is a planning aid: a way to compare opportunities before investing time in content.
How it is calculated
Each tool has its own formula, so scores differ between Semrush, Ahrefs, and others. Most weigh the backlink strength and authority of the pages currently ranking on page one, sometimes blended with signals like content quality and search intent. Because these are proprietary estimates, treat difficulty as a relative guide rather than an exact probability of ranking.
How we use difficulty in strategy
In our SEO and technical SEO work, keyword difficulty helps us prioritize. We look for terms where difficulty is realistic for a client's site authority yet search volume and buyer intent are strong, often favoring specific long-tail queries. We cross-check tool scores against the live results and a site's own data in Google Search Console before committing.

FAQ
Keyword Difficulty — common questions
What is a good keyword difficulty score to target?
It depends on your site's authority. Newer or smaller sites usually start with low-difficulty keywords, often under 30, while established sites can compete for higher-difficulty terms. There is no universal threshold; it is relative to your own domain strength.
Is keyword difficulty accurate?
It is a useful estimate, not a guarantee. Each tool calculates it differently and focuses on measurable signals like backlinks, so real-world ranking also depends on content relevance, intent match, and factors the score cannot fully capture. Use it directionally.
Why do Semrush and Ahrefs show different difficulty scores?
Because each uses its own proprietary formula and data. Semrush and Ahrefs weigh backlinks and other signals differently, so the same keyword can score differently in each. Compare within one tool rather than across tools.
