Google Ads Scripts
Overview
What Google Ads Scripts are
Google Ads Scripts are small JavaScript programs you write and run inside your Google Ads account to automate tasks that would otherwise be manual. They are part of Google Ads itself, so there is nothing to install and no additional fee to use them.
A script can operate on a single account or, with a manager (MCC) account, across many accounts at once. Common uses include automated bidding rules, pausing low-performing keywords, budget monitoring, quality-score tracking, and custom reports emailed on a schedule.
How Google Ads Scripts work
You write code in the built-in editor using JavaScript and the AdsApp object, which exposes campaigns, ad groups, keywords, ads, and reports. The script fetches data with selectors, applies logic, and then makes changes or writes results to a Google Sheet.
Scripts run manually or on an hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly schedule. They can also call external APIs and read from spreadsheets, which lets you connect weather data, inventory feeds, or business rules to your campaigns. Google enforces execution time and daily runtime limits per account.
Why Google Ads Scripts matter
Scripts remove repetitive manual work and let you enforce rules consistently, even overnight, without paying for a third-party platform. That makes them attractive for teams comfortable with a little code.
They are not the only option. Google's built-in automated rules cover simpler if-then tasks with no coding, and paid tools such as Optmyzr add more advanced automation and a visual interface. Scripts are the best fit when you need custom logic or external data that rules and standard settings cannot handle.

FAQ
Google Ads Scripts — common questions
Are Google Ads Scripts free?
Yes. Google Ads Scripts are a built-in feature of Google Ads at no extra charge. You only pay your normal ad spend, and the scripts run on Google's infrastructure.
What programming language do Google Ads Scripts use?
They use JavaScript. Google provides an AdsApp API that exposes campaigns, keywords, ads, and reports, so basic JavaScript knowledge is enough to build most common scripts.
How are Google Ads Scripts different from automated rules?
Automated rules handle simple if-then actions on a schedule with no coding, while scripts use JavaScript for custom logic, calculations, external API calls, and spreadsheet integration that rules cannot do.
