Dynamic Remarketing
Overview
What dynamic remarketing is
Dynamic remarketing is an advanced form of retargeting. Where standard remarketing shows the same generic ad to everyone who visited your site, dynamic remarketing tailors each ad to the exact products or services an individual viewed.
It is most associated with Google Ads and Meta, and is especially valuable for ecommerce and any business with a catalog of products or services.
How it works
Two pieces work together. A remarketing tag with custom parameters on your site records which specific items each visitor viewed and adds them to remarketing lists. A product feed holds the details — image, title, price — for every item.
When a past visitor browses other sites or apps, the platform automatically assembles a personalized ad pulling the products they saw from the feed. Product IDs sent by the tag must match IDs in the feed exactly, or the ads cannot render correctly.
Why it matters
Because the ads reflect genuine intent — the exact products someone considered — dynamic remarketing typically outperforms generic retargeting and is effective at recovering abandoned carts and browsing sessions.
Setup requires accurate tagging (often via Google Tag Manager) and a well-maintained product feed, so it depends on the same data hygiene as Shopping ads. As with all remarketing, respect frequency capping and privacy and consent requirements.

FAQ
Dynamic Remarketing — common questions
What is the difference between remarketing and dynamic remarketing?
Standard remarketing shows the same ad to all past visitors, while dynamic remarketing personalizes each ad to the specific products or services an individual viewed. Dynamic remarketing needs a product feed and item-level tracking, which standard remarketing does not require.
What do I need to set up dynamic remarketing?
You need a remarketing tag with custom parameters that records which items each visitor viewed, a product feed containing details for those items, and matching product IDs between the two. In Google Ads this usually involves Google Tag Manager and, for retail, Google Merchant Center.
Does dynamic remarketing work for non-ecommerce businesses?
Yes. While it is most common in ecommerce, dynamic remarketing supports other verticals — such as travel, real estate, and education — using business-specific feed types. Any business with a catalog of distinct offerings and item-level tracking can use it.
