Contentful
Overview
What Contentful is
Contentful is a cloud-based headless CMS designed around structured, API-delivered content. Instead of building fixed web pages, teams define content types, such as an article, product, or author, and fill them with reusable fields. Any website or app then requests that content through Contentful's APIs and displays it however it needs, on any platform.
How Contentful works
Editors manage entries in Contentful's web app, organized into spaces and content models. Developers pull content using its REST or GraphQL APIs and render it in a front end of their choosing. Because content is decoupled from presentation and served from Contentful's global infrastructure, the same source can power a marketing site, mobile app, and in-store display at once.
Why businesses choose Contentful
Contentful is aimed at organizations that publish at scale and need reliable, multi-channel content with role-based workflows. In web design and Next.js development, it lets a team ship a fast custom front end while marketers manage content independently. For a website redesign, moving to Contentful can future-proof content so it isn't tied to a single site's templates.

FAQ
Contentful — common questions
Contentful vs WordPress, what's the difference?
WordPress is a traditional CMS that manages content and renders the website together, with a huge plugin ecosystem. Contentful is a headless, API-first CMS that only manages content and serves it to any front end. WordPress is faster to launch a standard site; Contentful excels at multi-channel, custom-built experiences.
Is Contentful free?
Contentful offers a free tier for small projects and evaluation, with paid plans that scale by users, content records, and API calls. Enterprise plans add advanced roles, workflows, and support, so costs rise with team size and scale.
Contentful vs Sanity, which should I pick?
Both are strong API-first headless CMS platforms. Contentful offers a polished, standardized interface favored by larger organizations, while Sanity provides a more customizable, developer-first editing experience. Choose based on how much you value out-of-the-box structure versus deep customization.
