Call Tracking
Overview
What call tracking is
Call tracking is a method for measuring which marketing efforts generate phone calls. It assigns unique, trackable phone numbers to specific channels, campaigns, ads, or even individual keywords.
When a prospect calls one of those numbers, the platform records which source it came from and forwards the call to your real business line, so the caller experience is unchanged.
How it works
Static number tracking uses one dedicated number per channel — for example, a separate number on a billboard versus a Google Business Profile. Dynamic number insertion (DNI) goes further, swapping the number shown on a website based on how each visitor arrived, down to the keyword or campaign.
Most platforms capture call details — source, duration, location, and often a recording — and can push conversions into Google Ads, GA4, and CRMs so calls appear alongside form fills and other conversions.
Why it matters
For businesses where customers call rather than fill out forms — home services, healthcare, legal, and many local businesses — phone calls are a major source of revenue that web analytics alone cannot see. Call tracking closes that gap.
It reveals which keywords and campaigns truly drive calls, so budget shifts to what works. Note that recording calls carries consent and privacy obligations that vary by state and country, so configure disclosures accordingly. CallRail and Twilio-based solutions are common options.

FAQ
Call Tracking — common questions
How does call tracking work?
Call tracking assigns unique phone numbers to different marketing sources. When someone calls a number, the platform logs which campaign, ad, or keyword it maps to, then forwards the call to your real line — so you learn what drove the call without changing the caller's experience.
What is dynamic number insertion?
Dynamic number insertion (DNI) is a script that swaps the phone number shown on your website based on how each visitor arrived. It lets one page attribute calls down to the specific source, campaign, or keyword, rather than using a single static number per channel.
Is call tracking legal?
Call tracking itself is legal, but recording calls is subject to consent laws that differ by jurisdiction — some U.S. states require all parties to consent. If you record calls, use an appropriate disclosure or announcement and follow local regulations and platform requirements.
