Segment
Overview
How Segment works
Segment sits between the tools that generate data and the tools that use it. You install one tracking library (a source) that captures page views, clicks, and user traits, then pick destinations — Google Analytics, Meta Ads, a CRM, a data warehouse — and Segment forwards the same clean data to each. You can change tools later without re-instrumenting your site.
Core features
Beyond routing, Segment offers identity resolution to stitch a user's activity across devices into one profile, Protocols for enforcing a consistent tracking plan and data quality, and audience tools (Engage) for building and syncing segments to ad and messaging platforms. Warehouse connectors load raw event data into BigQuery, Snowflake, or Redshift for analysis.
Why it matters for marketing
Fragmented data is the root of bad attribution and duplicated tracking code. A CDP like Segment gives one reliable source of truth, which is why it underpins serious marketing attribution and lead-nurture automation work. Our team uses it to feed clean events into HubSpot automation, ad platforms, and analytics so every tool reports the same numbers.

FAQ
Segment — common questions
What is a customer data platform (CDP)?
A CDP is software that collects customer data from all your sources, unifies it into persistent profiles, and makes it available to other tools. Segment is one of the most widely used CDPs.
Segment vs Google Tag Manager?
They solve different problems. Google Tag Manager deploys and manages marketing tags and scripts on your site; Segment collects structured event data once and routes it, client- and server-side, to many destinations including data warehouses. Many teams use both.
Is Segment worth it for a small business?
It depends on tool sprawl. If you juggle several analytics, ad, and CRM tools and struggle to keep tracking consistent, Segment's free and lower tiers can pay off; very simple stacks may not need a CDP yet.
