What Java is and how it works
Java is a compiled, statically typed language: source code becomes platform-neutral bytecode that the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) executes on any operating system. That indirection is what delivers 'write once, run anywhere.' Automatic memory management through garbage collection, a vast standard library, and strong typing make it predictable and maintainable, which is why large teams rely on it for long-lived systems.
Where Java is used
Java dominates enterprise back-end development, most often through the Spring and Spring Boot frameworks that power APIs, banking systems, and large web platforms. It was the original language of Android and still runs much of that ecosystem, and it underpins big-data tools like Apache Hadoop and Kafka. Its stability and mature tooling make it a default where reliability matters more than novelty.
