It lets a domain owner publish a policy telling receiving servers what to do with messages that fail those checks, and it generates reports showing who is sending email using the domain. It closes the gaps SPF and DKIM leave open on their own.

How DMARC works

A DMARC record in DNS sets a policy—none (monitor only), quarantine (send to spam), or reject (block outright)—and requests reports. It also enforces "alignment," meaning the domain in the visible From address must match the domain validated by SPF or DKIM. This is what stops attackers from spoofing your exact From address, which SPF and DKIM alone don't prevent.
