Overview
What Clerk is
Clerk is a developer platform that handles user authentication and management so teams don't have to build it from scratch. It provides sign-up and sign-in, multi-factor authentication, passkeys, social and enterprise logins, session handling, and organization/team support, delivered through prebuilt UI components, hosted pages, and APIs. It is designed first for React, Next.js, and other modern web frameworks.
How it works
You install Clerk's SDK, wrap your app, and drop in components like sign-in forms and user profiles, or call its hooks and APIs. Clerk manages users, sessions, and tokens, and your backend verifies requests using the JWTs it issues. A hosted dashboard handles user administration, so authentication is production-ready without custom security code.
